She studied Sculpture and<br \/>Fashion at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam (1983-1986) and Art History at Rijks<br \/>Universiteit Leiden (1990-1992).<br \/>A sensitive and dedicated observer of behaviour and representation, Silvia B. denotes the schism between the constraints imposed by a cultivated reality and the deeper intuitive and instinctive layers that lie within us.The meticulously and patiently crafted sculptures of Silvia B. are in the first instance highly<br \/>attractive, luring the viewer to come and take a closer look. It is then that their disquieting<br \/>aesthetic becomes apparent as it is realized that their beauty is of no ordinary kind. These figures are hybrid beings: between man and beast, doll and robot, confusing gender and age.In addition to her iconic sculptures she creates drawings, photographs, a line of gloves,<br \/>SKINOVER (2006-2010), and curated several art projects such as Cry me a Castle (1990) in the<br \/>Castle of Rhoon and Bloody Beautiful (2007) at the Museum Rotterdam. Besides her specific<br \/>exhibition designs she also designed an apartment in Rotterdam and just finished one in London.She engaged in several artist cooperations, the latest result is a liquor brand, producing<br \/>STOOKOLIE 010 and Solitaire (2017). She was a founding member and manager of Het Wilde Weten, studio’s and artist run space in Rotterdam (1991-1996), Director of even months of the smallest museum of the world: Museum van Nagsael, Rotterdam (1995-2006) and the creator of the Dutch largest steel sculpture of a lady: U l t r a, Groningen (2004). Silvia B. has been a member of various committees for the Rotterdam City Art Center, CBK and a visiting lecturer at several Dutch Art Academies.Her work is represented in public collections such as Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen,<br \/>Museum Beelden aan Zee, Museum Rotterdam, Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Museum Voorlinden,<br \/>KRC Art Collection, Museum MORE, as well as various international private collections. She<br \/>received multiple grants and subsidies from the Mondriaan Fund, Prins Bernhard Fund and CBK<br \/>(between 1991 and 2016). Silvia B. was nominated for The Artist of the Year (2012, 2013, 2014,<br \/>2016, 2017, 2018) and for the Dolf Henkes Award (2014).Solo exhibitions include GEM (2008) and Museum Beelden aan Zee (2012) both in The Hague,<br \/>Ron Mandos gallery in Amsterdam (2016), Odapark in Venray (2016) and a large retrospective<br \/>show at Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede (2016-2017).Group shows include KIASMA – Museum for Contemporary Art in Helsinki, FI (2012), Verbeke<br \/>Foundation in Kemzeke, BE (2014), Mus\u00e9e la Halle St. Pierre in Paris, FR (2011), GAD-Art in<br \/>Oslo, NO (2008), Singer Museum in Laren (2012), Centraal Museum in Utrecht (2016), Stedelijk<br \/>Museum in Schiedam (2005), TENT in Rotterdam (2013), Museum Voorlinden (2017).<br \/>There have been many publications in national newspapers, international magazines, exhibition<br \/>and collection catalogues and recently her monograph OF BEAUTY AND DOUBT (2016) has<br \/>been launched.<br \/><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
