Alexandra Roozen
Pencil on paper is a constant source of inspiration for Alexandra Roozen and leads her to further explore drawing’s possibilities and boundaries. She creates her large drawings through a labor-intensive process, which contrasts with the current culture of efficiency and speed that we encounter in our daily lives. In response to this fast-paced culture, she investigates methods for stillness and contemplation, both in the working process and in the viewing process.
In her working method she uses the principle of repetition; She endlessly draws dashes, lines and scratches with small hand gestures. However simple these actions may seem, they are always unique and not reproducible due to all kinds of variables, such as the human hand, materiality, tools and environment. The interaction between these variables ranges from a minimal difference to a major visual impact and challenges the viewer to look again and again from varying perspectives, from the smallest element to the bigger picture and vice versa.
Alexandra Roozen (NL) graduated cum laude from the St. Joost art academy and her work is regularly supported by the Mondriaan Fund and Centrum Beeldende Kunst Rotterdam. Solo exhibitions of her work have recently been held in South Korea at the Younguen Museum for Contemporary Art, GALLERY2 Seoul (solo, KOR), Drawing Center Diepenheim (solo, NL), Verbeke Foundation (BE), Stedelijk Museum Schiedam (NL), and at art fairs, including VOLTA Basel (CH), VOLTA NY (solo, US), Art on Paper NY (solo, NL and US), Drawing Now Paris (FR) and PULSE Miami.
