Cecilia Rebergen
The work of Cecilia Rebergen is characterized by a playful mischief. By breaking with rules, she explores the limits of her material, the idea and herself as an artist. For her, letting go of expectations and wishes is the only way to be able to freely play with her work. In doing so, she accepts the risks her actions entail, with all the distorting, possibly destructive consequences. While crafting a sculpture as a wrestling match, the right flow substantially determines the quality of the final result.
An entirely different kind of phase precedes it. That phase is characterized by deepening concentration and care. Old manuscripts and other writings are the starting point in her recent work. Her painted letters and signs are an investigation into the essence of writing. By painting a script, she attempts to understand it. The confluence of sophisticated cultural-historical research and primal physicality in her work makes for grand, twisted yet elegant sculptures. The tension this clash of opposites causes, for Rebergen, touches the essence of the art and humanity.
The works of Rebergen can be found in private and public collections. She exhibits her work nationally and internationally and is a member of the Advisory Board for Visual Art of the municipality of Utrecht.
